Amalfi Coast’s Il Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of the God’s) is one of the most beautiful hikes in Italy. The hike, which winds its way from a little town in Bomerano all the way down to Positano, provides absolutely stunning views of the Amalfi Coast. If you find yourself in any of the towns on the Coast, this hike is an absolute must. Read below to learn everything you need to know to hike The Path of the Gods so you can start planning your next trip!
How to get to The Path of the Gods Trailhead
There are many ways to get to Bomerano, the starting point of The Path of the Gods. It all depends on how much money you want to spend to get there.
By public transportation (recommended!)
The cheapest (and most fun!) way to get there is to ferry over to the town of Amalfi. Ferrying is one of the most popular ways to get around the Amalfi Coast and for good reason. It provides you with panoramic shots of Amalfi’s picturesque coast.
Once you arrive in Amalfi, you’ll want to purchase a ticket for the SITA bus headed to Bomerano. There is a bus depot building right across from the bus parking lot along the water. If you have time to kill in Amalfi before your bus departs, check out the beautiful Amalfi Cathedral while you wait. The bus ride to Bomerano takes a little under an hour but the views are beautiful as you wind across the Amalfi Coast.
Once you arrive in Bomerano make your way to the Path of the Gods Trailhead which is marked in the town. Pro tip: download Googlemaps offline version of Bomerano and Positano so you can track your location and find these stops if you don’t have wifi.
By car
You can get pretty much anywhere on the Amalfi Coast by car. However, keep in mind these drives can take while as you wind across the small road in between the towns. There is also very little room on these roads, so you’ll want to make sure you’re comfortable driving under these conditions.
By taxi
Traveling to Bomerano by taxi can be a good option if you’re looking to minimize the hustle and bustle of getting to the Path of the God Trailhead and have someone drop you off. Just be sure to check the prices as these can be pricey depending on where your starting location is.
What to expect on The Path of the Gods Hike

The hike itself isn’t too strenuous. It is mostly on roads on dirt/gravel path until you hit the town on Nocelle which is about a 3.5 mile walk. Once you get to Nocelle you can continue on to Positano which is an additional 2 mile walk all down stairs- this may sound easy but the stairs can get taxing if you have knee problems so take that into consideration. If you don’t want to take the stairs down to Positano you can grab a taxi from Nocelle.
Il Sentiero Degli Del provides some of the most breathtaking views in Italy so be prepared for beautiful views almost the entire duration of the hike.
What to bring
The full like is about 6 miles so you’ll want to make sure you have the essentials when hiking The Path of the Gods. While it’s not considered a strenuous hike with steep inclines, you will be out in the elements for a long period of time. So, what should you add to your list?
Hiking boots
Hiking shoes are great for any hike you do as they provide you with stability and good foot support during your hikes. However, The Path of the Gods is definitely a trail you can use regular athletic shoes on. But if you’re looking for a hiking shoe recommendation check out the below

Rain Poncho
Bringing a rain poncho is highly recommended. Rolling rain showers are possible along the coast, and you don’t want to get all the way up to Bomerano to start your hike and have it rain on you. There are small general stores that do have ponchos, but it would be smart to buy a cheap one beforehand and stash it in your backpack.

Backpack
You won’t need a large backpack for your hike, but you’ll want something to carry your essentials since you’ll be trekking across the Amalfi Coast.

Water bottle
Make sure you fill up your water bottle before you leave for the hike. The town of Bomerano has small cafes in it where you can ask to fill up.

Plenty of euros
Make sure you bring a stash of euros with you on the hike. While Bomerano is a decent sized town, it’s always good to bring some amount of cash so you can purchase food, water, or transportation. Plus, once you finish the hike you will end up in Positano which has a great selection of places to shop and eat at!
Should you hike Il Sentiero Degli Dei?
The Path of the Gods hike should absolutely be your itinerary if you are headed to the Amalfi Coast! It is a breathtaking and manageable hike that offers you once in a lifetime views of Italy.
